He had early season success at the Enjoy Jakarta Indonesia Open and the Ballantine's Championship, both events co-sanctioned by the European and Asian Tours, and recorded a creditable 13th place finish in the British Open at Turnberry.

He now has a record 12 titles on the Asian Tour to his name. His impressive form has helped the Thai establish himself in the top-20 of the Race to Dubai rankings and he is well on his way to becoming Asian number one for an unprecedented third time after building up a commanding lead in the Order of Merit.

After a slow start to his 2008 season, which was hit by injuries and illness, Thongchai moved into overdrive with back-to-back wins at the Hana Bank Vietnam Masters and the Johnnie Walker Cambodian Open.

Thongchai turned professional when he was 30 after serving as a Ranger in the Royal Thai Army, regularly making parachute drops. He was allowed to play plenty of golf and enjoyed a distinguished amateur career.
